The inauguration of Chedda Nagar Flyover and the East-west arm of SCLR is expected to bring a massive traffic relief for Mumbaikars. With the opening of the two corridors, commuters will be able to make a signal-free commute from Mumbai to Thane and Thane to Navi Mumbai. Mumbai: In good news Mumbaikars, two new corridors - at the Chheda Nagar Junction in Ghatkopar and Kapadia Nagar in Vakola - will now provide motorists a "signal-free" commute from Mumbai to Thane and Thane to Navi Mumbai, easing traffic and reducing pollution in eastern Mumbai.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the flyover at Chheda Nagar along with the east-west arm of Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) on Thursday.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Metropolitan Commissioner S.V.R. Srinivas said that these projects will help decongest traffic in the eastern suburbs on the main and arterial roads, as well provide quick connectivity between the Eastern and Western express highways

Signal-Free Commute from Mumbai to Thane, Thane to Navi Mumbai

1. Chedda Nagar flyover opens for public

A 1.25 km long flyover from Mankhurd to Thane on the second level of Eastern Express Highway that will allow a signal-free commute between Thane and Navi Mumbai was inaugurated yesterday. The flyover, which was opened at 7 pm, criss-crosses above the Chheda Nagar junction from Indian Oil Corporation on GMLR to Thane-bound lanes on Eastern Express Highway. The flyover was built at a cost Rs 94 crore.

Metropolitan commissioner SVR Srinivas said, “More than 60000 vehicles use the Chheda nagar stretch.”

The work on this Chheda nagar junction improvement project began in 2017. It is major choke point as vehicles coming from Mankhurd have to wait for nearly 20 -30 minutes on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road before entering the Eastern Express Highway to travel towards Thane.

The opening of this flyover will also smoothen traffic that comes from Amar Mahal and goes towards Mankhurd as well as Thane.

2. One arm of SCLR has been opened for vehicles now

A 3.03 km long elevated corridor linking Kurla to Vakola of the Santacruz Chembur Link Road Extension (SCLR) Phase I has also been thrown open for traffic, easing up the traffic flow in the region and benefitting the corporates centered around there.

The SCLR and the Eastern Freeway had resulted in traffic snarls at Chheda Nagar Junction in Ghatkopar for which the MMRDA is building three flyovers and one subway, of which the flyover linking the SCLR has been opened for traffic. It is expected to bring huge relief at the CST road-BKC junction.

The work on the SCLR bridge had begun in 2016 and was scheduled to be completed in 2019. The Rs 415 crore SCLR extension project is still incomplete as work on taking the SCLR above the Western Express Highway and take it till Vakola junction is still underway and expected to be completed by December 2023.

A total of three flyovers were planned at Chheda Nagar. Of this, an elevated road which connects existing North-South Chheda Nagar flyover to Amar Mahal flyover was opened in March 2022. Another 600 metre long South-North flyover at Chheda nagar will be opened in December.
